What is spill control and containment?
This is where spills or leaks of chemicals, oils and other liquids are contained within a barrier, or captured in a drainage system, rather than being absorbed at the surface or contaminating the surrounding environment.
Spill regulations and legislation in the UK
Spill control and containment is a legal requirement for businesses across the UK. Oil and chemical spills can have a wide range of effects on the immediate and surrounding environment, also affecting wildlife and humans that it comes into contact with.
Key facts:
-
All fuels and oils stored in containers over 200 litres must be contained on or within a bund or secondary containment unit. In Scotland, this rule applies to any amount of fuel or oil.
-
The bund should be capable of storing 10% of the largest container, or 25% of the total storage capacity, whichever is the greater.
-
The Environment Agency (England & Wales), Scottish Environment Protection Agency, Northern Ireland Environment Agency offer advice and assistance with complying with current legislation in the UK.
-
Non compliance is a criminal offence and may result in prosecution.
